Greek Myth and Legend: Endymion
In Greek mythology, Endymion (Ancient Greek: Ἐνδυμίων, gen.: Ἐνδυμίωνος) could have been a handsome Aeolian shepherd or hunter, or even a king who ruled and was said to reside at Olympia in Elis, but he was also said to reside and was venerated on Mount Latmus in Caria, on the west coast of Asia Minor. Apollonius of Rhodes is one of the many poets who tell how Selene, the Titan goddess of the moon, loved the mortal. She believed him to be so beautiful that she asked Endymion's father, Zeus, to grant him eternal youth so that he would never leave her. In Greek mythology, Nyx (Νύξ, "night", Nox in Roman translation) was the primordial goddess of the night. A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation, and was the mother of personified gods such as Hypnos (sleep) and Thánatos (death). Her appearances in mythology are sparse, but reveal her as a figure of exceptional power and beauty.
the Collection of paintings Endymion and Nyx explores the relationship and myth behind the two, through metaphorical colour and form.
