Gerard Tunney

I studied Fine Art at Sunderland and Newcastle Universities, (BA HONS Fine Art & MA Fine Art) Since then I supplemented my studio work by either teaching or working in the theatre. This has been linked to a series of Fine Art Residencies with The Birmingham Royal Ballet: Opera North; Northern Sinfonia.

The dominant themes that emerge from my work are transformation and change through the use of costumes, lighting, make-up etc. My ballet paintings attempt to depict the backstage atmosphere and activities as the dancers go about their daily routines; another group are influenced by Ovid's "metamorphoses" and explore the similarities and differences between human and animal behavior.
