Tony Kenwright

Tony Kenwright worked at a press photographer for over 25 years during which time he received numerous awards for his work. His whole career has involved images, whether as photographs or as fine art. After being a hobby artist he began to take his talent more seriously in the early 90s when he began creating works for commissions and selling paintings through local galleries. His work was regularly exhibited and received a number of commendations. His most recent one-man show was covered by Granada TV (You can see a link below):

Tony now divides his time between running his opwn photographic business and painting. He paints quickly, often mixing colours on the canvas to add vibrancy to his work and will often spread paint with the edge of a credit card  rather than a brush. His choice of subject matter is unlimited but, as a photographer, he sees no point in painting a photographic reproduction of a scene, preferring instead to bring his own visions and feelings into his work. Although his works rarely take more than a day to paint they are usually the result of an extensive series of colour sketches almost always on location. He says it is a trap to believe that  photographs are a help to artists. They hinder free thinking and restrict expression. Sketching from life or from within the mind is always better.

 “Tony Kenwright paints in a free-flowing style that gives his work a movement and freshness that adds greatly to his subject matter. He has a photographer's eye for composition and an artist's feel for colour.

 There is in his work, despite the thematic variety, always a sense of something happening.  Above all, there is a sense of adventure in Kenwright's paintings which pulls in the viewer.”
