Born in South Yorkshire and now living and working from her studio in Leeds . Her education began at Bretton Hall College where her studies into Textile Design meant she could explore with vigour an energetic and expressive style. The work of Victoria Horkan is at once familiar at once stark and fiercely contemporary. Abstract shapes and brooding colours blend to create works which depict real emotion and substance.
Throughout her young career she has experimented with palettes and the expression of fluidity to great effect. She has reduced the form in her art
to its most simple, clean and uncluttered shape, creating the perfect portal for the expression of movement. Her work develops from one painting to another sensing that each piece is a development from the last. She filters ideas, trying to live with them for a number of days before taking it back to the studio to develop. This process allows her to distil the emotive quality of the object, rather than merely reproduce its physical form, allowing her to develop the ideas and create paintings that are incredibly human.
Her work doesn’t intentionally deliver any profound message, questioning why her work actually should. Victoria immaculately conveys the raw beauty of creating beautiful paintings, giving the value and credibility of the artwork and how it is perceived by the viewer its importance. Her main focus is to inject the spirit of the paintwork in an aesthetically pleasing way. Her work is quite simply part of her, because the idea hasn’t
come from a man-made object, a building or scene. What she creates simply comes from her, a thought process which she develops and then executes.
