About the artwork
This sketch was drawn from a fabulous life drawing session with Brighton based Cellist Bela Emerson. We invited Bela to come and play for us while we stood around transfixed by our easels. I produced a series of sketches while she played which lead onto a longer study with paint. She alternated between a traditional wooden cello, to an electric version with its unusual shape. I really enjoyed drawing to live music which worked so well with the lively inks and quick graphite pencil marks. The drawing is board mounted, comes apply wrapped in cellophane, ready for framing.

When I was three years old, I told my parents that I wanted to be a violinist or an artist. The closest I got to the violin was ten years of guitar lessons, but art has been an enduring passion, through school, art college and beyond. Primarily, I love to paint people. I relish the challenge to get an accurate likeness whilst trying to keep my brush marks lively, colourful and interesting. I also love colour. I get a real kick adding vibrant touches to an otherwise subtle scene, whether it’s a portrait, landscape, equestrian piece or whatever. It’s those unexpected hints that can bring a painting alive and bring inexplicable joy to the viewer. Based in West Sussex, UK.
