About the artwork

Hurn Ford, just beyond the western edge of the New Forest is Hurn Village, with the Hurn Stream running through it. There used to be a ford here but now it has it's own little bridge, just as well as the road serves the busy little Hurn Airport. As the water is so shallow here, the stream splits and reforms just north of the bridge forming a small island. This is where I always imagine the other 'Hern', the spirit and protector of the woodlands, to be standing. There was a lot of debate as to whether I should paint him as a Roe or Red Deer. Artist friends all over Dorset and Hampshire got involved and it was decided that, as the smaller Roe deer were more secretive, moving silently through the woodlands, that it should be a Roe. I'm quite pleased, as he's my favourite. So here he is Hern at Hurn Ford. (Oh one other little thing that might be interesting, this little island is just covered in snowdrops in Spring!)
