About the artwork

An original painting of a wild hyena. This is a painting of a Spotted hyena, outside her den, early on a winter’s morning, (in Singita, South Africa). I was inspired to paint this painting by the way the light falls in her fur, eye & nose. Unluckily for hyenas, bad press has led to many misconceptions about them. They have often been depicted as stupid or cowardly scavengers, when they are in fact believed to be highly intelligent. And although they may scavenge, they are primarily hunters. This painting was painted with traditional oil paint, on a stretched canvas.

It’s such an uplifting sight, that it’s inspiring! I also love doing oil paintings of people, places & animals. Painting in oils can be tricky, and there are times when it’s extremely frustrating, but despite that - or maybe because of it - it can be incredibly rewarding too! Life as an artist is a never-ending process of discovery. There’s always something new to try, a new medium or a different subject matter.. the possibilities are ... (see more)
