About the artwork
Clouds swirl around Errigal Mountain in Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland. It is the tallest peak of the Derryveagh Mountains and the tallest peak in County Donegal.Errigal is also the most southern, steepest and highest of the mountain chain, called the "Seven Sisters" by locals. The nearest peak is Mackoght, which is also known as Little Errigal or Wee Errigal (Irish: an Earagail Bheag). Errigal is well known for the pinkish glow of its quartzite in the setting sun. Another noted quality is the ever-changing shape of the mountain depending on what direction you view it from.
Emma Cownie has been a professional artist since 2013. Her work mainly focuses on the natural world, on the coast and woodlands of the Gower Peninsula, South Wales. She uses vibrant but naturalistic colour to bring attention to the extraordinary beauty of both landscapes and everyday scenes. Emma achieves a very strong visual impact, derived from bold blocks of colours and an expressive palette that is widely used in modern art and pop art. Emma recently moved to Donegal, a genuine wilderness on the West coast of Europe, where she lives part-time. This epic landscape has provided new inspiration for her work. The Irish skies are vast and dramatic, and the landscape has a rugged, stony beauty which she conveys in her work.
