About the artwork

I was inspired to do this painting of my niece, because the image captured a cute moment, where she was playing with her favourite doll, and in her imagination, bringing it (the mermaid) to life in the sea. I enjoy doing paintings of people by the sea, where there are reflections on the water or on the wet sand. In this case, the light reflections were created by the water rippling, as my niece pulled her doll along the seabed.

Many a time, the little corner where I paint has been like a citadel, a place where I can escape & get lost in painting. There’s something about the painting process, something to do with the intense concentration & the quiet creativity, that gives an artist a sense of inner peace, for the most part anyway! I love to do oil paintings of people, flowers & wildlife. Painting in oils can be tricky, & there are times when it’s extremely frustrating, but despite that - or maybe because of it - it can be incredibly rewarding too. Life as an artist is a never-ending process of discovery. There’s always something new to try, & I look forward to exploring it all.
