About the artwork
A nude Study partly inspired by the Richard Strauss Opera 'Salome'. The opera was extremely controversial when premiered and was based on Oscar Wilde's play of the same name. Salome is a seductress who lusts after John the Baptist and at the end dances for her step father and persuades him to have the prophet beheaded and have it brought to her on a platter. There are many works in art history of Salome including those produced by such artists as Caravaggio, Moreau, Klimt and Beardsley .
