About the artwork

The Small Tortoiseshell is among the most well-known butterflies in Britain. I was inspired by lunchtime walks through the greenbelt area surrounding Gatwick airport. Slightly outside of this area is a bit of peace and tranquilly and is habituated by deer, rabbits, birds and butterflies. The work took a week to create. Emphasis has been made on detail and colour to view the creature in all its glory. I enjoyed adding scales and fur with water soluble pencils. The paintings flat appearance was made by carefully using pencils on top of one another in a gradient and finishing by blending the colours with water and brush. An ethical display has been created and the butterfly sits proudly in a little wooden display frame. The piece would be perfect for the office, alcove, hallway or a gift for any butterfly enthusiast. The artwork comes ready framed, ready to hang and securely packaged with certificate of authenticity.
