About the artwork

This painting started out as message art where the words ' just accept it ' were painted an up-cycled dust sheet with a rough and wide uneven weave. The fabric is difficult medium to use. It was stretched over a reclaimed old 4ft tall x 5ft wide wooden frame, stapled and impregnated with at first, white emulsion..after several layers there were still gaps. At this stage I painted the words ' just accept it ' in charcoal..this washed out mostly with the next application of thin paint ..leaving a slight residue and it disappeared and re-appeared as I tried to infuse the media with some form of permanence. I changed the paint media to water colour, then gauche ....after several more applications a shadow remained as I washed out each layer with water a.l.a, my " art in the rain " series.technique and went through the whole process with acrylic paint, washing it out a couple of hours later..eventually I set the media with an acrylic varnish, letting it wash the latest topping of the words away as I stood the canvas upright. Once set, dry - I could now apply the words again, wash them out and use the canvas as intended...but it did not quite work out that way.. the semi-permanence of the words and the media moved me towards using different types of oil based paint & oil pastels over impasto and layered acrylic substrate to make up a whole new painting, which is an abstract landscape in a semi-psychedelic style. The title and the message stuck. This is an original up-cycled piece of art with an oil painting finish and very heavy for a dust sheet, impasto in parts, textured and substantial. The finished painting, is combative, bold, vibrant, a statement piece as a semi- psychedelic abstract which reflects the fact that we change things daily in out interactions with them. Some may call it retro, funky, I can live with that. So, Just accept it. Thank you

My name is Tony Broadbent, born in 1958 and I am an artist from Leeds, West Yorkshire My artwork is mainly abstract, semi-surreal and occassionaly psychedelic from oil on canvas to pen and ink on paper, mixed media. All my work is concerned with colour and form as well as the representation of a theme or angst. The signature of my work is bold, vibrant colours with stark or subtle imagery and has been described as a departure from the mundane. I am inspired by 1950's Abstract Expressionism, the Post Impressionists and Pre - Raphaelites mainly though I will steal any influences that attract me and paint in any style that moves me. My favorite artists are Dali., Picasso, Cesar Manrique, Miro ( to an extent ), the Pre - Raphaelites, W.M.Tur... (see more)
