About the artwork

Unframed original oil on canvas: Width 70cm Height 100cm or 27.5ins x 39.5 ins. Signed. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Emerald Seas is inspired by the South Devon Coastline. It reminds me of holidays swimming and snorkelling in the Mediterranean and also trips to Cornwall. The turquoise sea off St.Ives is a particular favourite of mine. This is one in a new series of paintings examining the play of light. I am interested in the way the sunlight hits the water. This creates movement and a play light.  I like to examine the constant colour changes. For example, the shallow water can vary from the palest blue almost turquoise, to emerald green turning to a deep indigo blue. I aim to make the viewer to feel a certain amount of escapism when looking this painting. But also give an immersive experience. The versatility of oil paint makes it an ideal medium to work with. For example,  I can layer the paint in glazes to give translucency to a painting. In addition,  it is such robust a medium that I can scrape the paint back and scratch into it too. As a Teignmouth based artist I am close to the south west coast and Dartmoor. Both of which both influence my work. I often return to the work of Kurt Jackson and Peter Doig for inspiration and a sense of place. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and I gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a member of the Devon Artist Network. More recently I have been given the status of an Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.

Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 15 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth. My recent work has been focused on the changing colours of the sea and childhood memories of holidays to the Mediterranean and annual visits to Torbay (before the M5 was built). I have been painting a series of wave paintings for over 5 years now. It is the light coming through the waves and ever-changing colour of the sea that I am keen to explore. Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me. The way collectors see my work will be unique to them because of their own individual colour perception. Painting f... (see more)
