About the artwork
I have been very lucky to have visited Belgium a few times and I find it to be such a beautiful country in terms of food, its people and its architecture. For this scene I was particularly drawn to the amazing colourful buildings and the warm setting sun reflected in the water. This painting is the first of a new series of mine which focuses on reflections in lakes and rivers. I am drawn to strong, colourful compositions and I have a particular interest in symmetry; but this painting means more to me than that as it is imbued with my own emotional response to the beautiful city of Bruges and as such I have added my own artistic license to the scene by altering the perspective of the two buildings on the right so that they face the viewer and draw the eye in, round and through the scene with the intent of transporting you to the beautiful city of Bruges. I am a midlands based Artist and I feel very lucky to be inspired by the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. Some of its influences can be seen in my work, particularly paintings that focus on reflections in lakes and water. Having drawn and painted all my life I studied Art and Design at Derby university. At that time I had a real passion for drawing and painting animals and took on many commissions painting people's pets. I never lost my drive to paint and draw but not knowing anyone that had made a full time career as an Artist I decided to follow an academic route and became a lecturer teaching at colleges and universities.
