Still life flower paintings speak of beauty and death. My still life paintings explore these dual themes through a longstanding relationship with the peony flower. I work with my flowers from their first coy blooming though to decay. For me flowers become more interesting and more beautiful as their petals become translucent in death – leaving a shroud of richly hued stems and petals that are both intense and fragile. I approach painting as a process of discovery. I am interested in the aesthetic quality of paint and the materiality of paint on the surface of the canvas. I also admire and constantly return to the works of Bonnard whose light filled interiors and portraits I never tire of looking at. My paintings aim to communicate the beauty I see in the flower form and the space they occupy in my studio, most often an intimate corner, cast with shadows and light, perched in exquisite glass vases upon tables draped in vintage linen. For me the hollow head of peony flower, or any flower, is a dwelling place of beauty. www.fionascheiblart.co.uk
