In 1771 Richard Trevithick was born in Illogan, a village just outside Redruth, in the heart of the Cornish Mining World Heritage site. Trevithick was the creator of the 'Cornish Engine', an invention that allowed for the pumping of water from great depths that made deep mine workings throughout the world possible. The Redruth/Camborne area became the centre of world mining, and after the decline of the tin mines there was a massive diaspora of Cornish miners. Even today it is said that you will find a Cornish miner at the bottom of every mine in the world. Just over the hill from Redruth, as you travel towards Falmouth, you come to the village of Lanner, with the remains of engine houses and other mine workings scattered around. This painting is on a narrow canvas with painted sides and is ready to hang or can be framed.
I am a Cornish artist who has spent many years developing my distinctive style so that today, my work is instantly recognisable. Being self-taught has been advantageous - my style has not been moulded but has evolved. It has not been influenced by the work of others but has become uniquely my own by the processes of practice, development, persistence, trial and error. A lot of the inspiration for my work comes from the photographs that I take whilst out kayaking and walking along the coast and rivers of this beautiful County. I portray what I see with innocence and simplicity, using the vibrant colours of acrylic paint to create my view of the world
