“Sometimes you’re just bowling along and you come across a sight that takes your breath away” – this is how Mary Kemp starts the description of her painting titled Red Poppy Field. And she is right. A landscape, a sunset, a meadow, a poppy field, we are all blown away by nature’s beauty and we want to capture it not just on the retina and as a memory, but in an artwork too. In a way, we can say that an artist translates that beauty and presents it to the public to be admired and cherished.

This is the case with Red Poppy Field, an original artwork created in oil on canvas by artist of the month Mary Kemp. The image is so familiar that every one of us can relate to it. We like poppies not just for their Remembrance Day symbolism, but also for their bright scarlet colour.

It is amazing how nature associates complementary colours and a poppy field is the perfect example of the red and green combination that makes both colours to stand out.

The painting captures their complementarity beautifully and the eyes are drawn from the foreground to the background where the individual poppies transform into a red mass. The continuity is interrupted by a line of trees that give the artwork perspective and depth.

Red Poppy Filed is a beautiful painting, calming and aesthetically pleasing while capturing a well known image in the artist’s distinctive style.
