No matter what approach the artists take to their floral paintings, the general advice is to always have the actual flowers in front of them, rather than attempting to paint from memory. The latter is also possible, of course, and the results are often spectacular. Yet by having the actual object to look at while painting it, the artists can capture its essence in any style they choose.
This applies to Elizabeth Williams’ painting, titled Roses & Daisies. Although created in a somewhat semi-abstract style, the artist was inspired by the actual flowers as stated in the description: “A gestural oil painting of these lovely flowers, bought for me as a ‘thank you’ – and as I frequently passed by them every day, I knew they were crying out to be painted!”
Created in shades of pink, red, yellow and white, the impasto technique gives the artwork a contemporary look while the textured flowers stand out beautifully against the vertically-lined background.
“Taking what we are freely given by nature’s own vibrant palette it is far easier for me to paint than to put into words! Arranging the flowers and objects in my Still Life paintings with the tones and shadows controlled by careful lighting and watching the imagery slowly evolve to a flourish of the finished piece, is what inspires and drives me,” concludes the artist.
