Now it really depends on the type of painting your wanting to do, the effects you wish to achieve and the medium your using, but here is a basic list on some of the materials you will need to get you get started:

Brushes: We will look at the different types of brushes more closely a bit later, but your certainly going to need to start with these. My advice would be ‘don’t go cheap’ there is nothing worst than cheap brushes that buckle under pressure, or worst still shed hairs all over your painting, and sometimes you may not even notice until its dry and then its a real nightmare to sort out, or in some cases ruined. Brushes can be expensive to buy but can last you a long time if they are properly cared for, so better to invest now than ruin paintings and have to keep replacing them.

Pallet: Nothing fancy here for me, I simply use the DIY decorating trays, their cheap, big enough to mix your paints and easy to replace. Job done!

Paints: Quite important I would say. Now there are different types of paints you can use, the four main being acrylics, oils, watercolours and gouache. Again I wouldn’t scrimp here unless of course your starting out and just want to experiment a bit and see how you get on, but for the professional I would always invest in the best, quality is very important if your looking too produce the best results or with the hope to sell your work at a later stage.

Varnish: Always varnish your painting, this is vital for its long-term survival. There are lots of different ways you can protect your work but to start with you need to think about buying some varnish to coat your finished painting.

Once you have all four your ready to make a start on your painting.
