We, as a nation, love our pets. They are not only an important part of our families, but a never ending source of inspiration for artists specialising in animal portraits.

Apart from doing commissions on request, some artists have their own pets to paint, draw, observe and capture in their various states for our enjoyment.

Cats and dogs are probably the most popular, but birds, fish and guinea pigs are other home animals loved by Brits.

As for the artworks, they can be created in a variety of media and styles, from acrylic and oil to pastel and charcoal, from realistic portraits to impressionistic images.

Throughout history, some portraits of famous people – aristocrats and royalty – captured owners alongside their pets. From hunting dogs to indoor dogs, it is enough to visit a few galleries to observe that animals were an important part of people’s lives.

This legacy had continued until today so both artists and admirers can’t imagine their lives without their beloved pets.

So from owning a pet to owning an original artwork of your pet the distance is shorter than ever as such artwork can bring a lot of joy to the owner alongside the family portraits.
