The Seafront by Martin J Leighton

Not long now until the summer is here and although it doesn’t feel like it yet, we can’t wait for the warmer days to arrive so we can spend our week-ends and holidays by the beach. But this posting is not about our holidays, but about one of the most popular categories for both artists and admirers alike: paintings that feature the beach.

Beach artworks feature a wide range of subjects. Some of these are seascapes, the aquatic world, and paintings showing people waking by the beach and enjoying the sunset, families playing or people walking their dogs. Created in acrylic, oil and mixed media, beach paintings capture not only the water, the waves and the sky, but the land and the sand as well.

Depending on the scene they are capturing, such paintings can be calming, tranquil and relaxing or cosy and familiar. Some of the Arts2Arts artists interested in this subject are: Martin J Leighton, Elizabeth Williams and Sandra Francis.

“What inspires me to paint the sea is that it is a beautiful and ever changing subject which has endless possibilities. Before I moved to the beachside residence where I now live I began painting tropical seascapes in a semi abstract way. I am sure that in my subconscious mind I have beaches and the edge of the sea and palm trees engrained, as I was brought up as a toddler on the silver sandy beaches of East Africa”, says Sandra Francis.
