Richard Pearce

Based in United Kingdom
I was born in a country that no longer exists: Rhodesia - today it is Zimbabwe. As a child I ran around bare foot and went exploring in the bush. I started drawing my finds at night (no TV). As I was a little wild, I was sent to boarding school. It was on the site of an old gold mine. Art was part of the curriculum, I loved it. As an Adult I qualified as a teacher and was sent to Chipinga. I started painting backdrops for the plays we did. I spent a lot of time researching and making sketches for the plays. This took a lot of time .Once ready to paint the backdrop, we used an army of school children, teachers and parents to complete the work. It was a real community effort. After leaving Rhodesia for South Africa, I started taking art lessons. My teacher was very patient and taught me the watercolour basics. Val really got me into perspective, opaque, stainer and transparent paint perspective and composition I arrived in the UK and was thunderstruck by the divers types of buildings, scenery, quirky towns and people: I wanted to paint them all. I did some pictures in watercolour, but changed to oils.Coming from Africa I love strong bright colours. When we have a clear day in the UK colour and shapes are vibrant, only oils gave me that brightness. I am a semi-professional artist I usually paint up to 4 hours per day. I also work part time. So I guess I have the best of both worlds. I paint and enjoy the company of people.
