Richard Seekins is a self-taught artist, born in Morley in 1965. His first introduction to art was at a very early age. His Mother worked as a life model at Batley College of Art and often took Richard along and he would sit with his own paper and paints.
Throughout school art was always Richard’s favourite subject and one he excelled in but on leaving school his interest moved to photography. This became his main hobby for many years and in 1999 he did a City & Guilds in Photography at Dewsbury College passing with distinction. This led to a part time career in photography doing weddings, model and catalogue shoots for five years.
His passion for art was rekindled in 2013, starting with a pencil drawing of his wife’s late Father. With a little encouragement he dusted off his watercolours and began to paint, moving on to experiment with acrylics before finally moving to oils. Richard now paints in either oils or watercolours and enjoys the challenges and effects that the different mediums provide.
Art has now become Richard’s passion. His time as a photographer has given him an exceptional eye for detail, colours, contrast and composition and these are reflected in his paintings.
Richard has always preferred to paint people and nature. His rare ability to capture a likeness has led to him doing commissioned portraits.
