History of abstract art

Over the centuries many different artistic movements have emerged and gone on to product a wide range of unique and captivating paintings. However one of the most influential movements of all has to be the abstract art form, which emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century. The abstract genre, which is influenced by other art forms including romanticism, impressionism and expressionism, depicts subjects that are often interesting and unusual to look at. Some of the most famous abstract painters include Kazimir Malevich (1879 – 1935) and Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944).

Abstract artists often use colour and form to express emotion and meaning, which can be uniquely interpreted from one person to the next. It is their unique qualities that make them popular with art lovers of all ages. Abstract paintings often feature people, animals, landscapes and inanimate objects, though often it is difficult to tell upon first look. This is because abstract painters do not attempt to portray a recognisable reality in their work. Sometimes artists take a visible object and extract elements of it to change its form in order to achieve a simplified piece of abstract art, whereas others do not use a source at all, instead using geometric shapes to create something unique and beautiful.
