A very contemporary concept, abstract art is a style which is guaranteed to draw either fervent praise or fierce criticism, being a type of painting which doesn’t necessarily appeal to everyone.

 

What does abstract art mean?

Abstract art means that the subject or core theme is rather less defined than in more traditional art, but doesn’t mean that there isn’t a discernible picture or pattern. A very loose phrase used to describe any type of art which is particularly conceptual or interpretative, abstract art can be fascinating, hypnotic and quite simply irresistible.

Until the late 19th century, all artwork was intended to be representative but this changed with the evolution of photography. A means of capturing pictures more accurately, photography freed artists from the duty of preserving a picture exactly.

Abstract art can be said to fall into a number of different styles including Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism and Post Impressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Plurism, to name just a few of the more important movements.

Learning about abstract art

Understanding how to read abstract art is not a complicated skill, and it’s important to remember, that just like any other style of art, not every piece will appeal to everyone. Consider whether the painting conveys a particular mood or atmosphere, how does it make you feel when you look at it? Is there anything which springs to mind when you look at the art, or does it make you inexplicably think of a certain thing?

The artist may have had a certain end result when creating the piece and although your reaction to the piece may seem totally random, it could in fact be a very carefully manipulated reaction.

An abstract piece of art aims to ‘speak’ to the individual, but if you’re not feeling anything when looking at something, it may be that it’s just not for you. Don’t dismiss all types of abstract art because one piece in particular doesn’t draw you.

There are pieces of abstract art that have clear defined lines and convey a certain briskness but you’ll also find soft, dreamy pieces too. Abstract art covers a huge range of bases and to dismiss it entirely means missing out on such a large portion of artwork.
