I am an artist working mainly in watercolour, pen-and-wash and acrylic. Much of my work is inspired by walking, painting and sketching in the countryside. I am particularly fascinated by the play of light and shadow across the landscape. My style is realistic without being photographic, and traditional but with a contemporary edge.
For ten years I lived in southern France where I discovered the joys of watercolour sketching en plein air and began to develop my pictorial style. I now live in the Pennines, on the edge of the West Yorkshire moors. My studio, a wonderful light-filled space, is located in a converted Victorian cotton mill overlooking the river and canal. The rolling hills, drystone walls, abundant wildlife and ever-changing colours of the natural world offer an endless supply of inspiration. I love to capture the visual language of the industrial heritage of the north, from the imposing architecture of the old woollen and cotton mills, to the remarkable engineering of locks and bridges on the waterways.
I also work to commission. Working from photographs and on-site sketches, I have created many bespoke paintings of subjects ranging from family homes and gardens to wedding venues and beloved destinations. A unique, custom work of art permanently recording your treasured memories can make a wonderful gift for special occasions.
