As head of design in a busy digital agency, I spent more than 20 years pixel pushing behind the screen. It was tougher than people might imagine, long hours, demanding clients, demeaning tasks... I'd enjoy getting home of an evening to unleash my pent up creative energy working on large expressive abstract paintings.
Then 2008 happened, the contracts dried up and I was liberated from the digital world. As a reaction against everything electronic I decided it was time to focus on my painting.
It was time to focus on the real world, to get out of the city and paint nature. This was a place I'd grown up and needed to return to. My early paintings explored impressionistic techniques, especially in terms of capturing clouds and skies. Over time my style evolved from more representational depictions to looser, freer, more expressive and abstract pieces. I set out to challenge myself by continuing to take risks and explore new possibilities, whilst learning new skills and techniques.
