About the artwork
The painting depicts the view of Albert Bridge from the Chelsea embankment. named in memory of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Prince Consort to Queen Victoria, the attractive Albert Bridge was designed by Rowland Mason Ordish and built between 1870 and 1872. It was redesigned, renovated and strengthened by Sir Joseph Bazelgette just a dozen years after its completion and was made to more closely resemble a cable-stayed bridge, The Greater London Council in the 70s added two concrete piers, which transformed the central span into a simple beam bridge. As a result, today the bridge is an unusual hybrid of three different design styles.
