Title <01> <11>British wildlife British bird paintings >/11> The Wren (a bird portrait) Description The smallest of the British birds, bearing the longest Latin name of ‘Troglodytes troglodytes’ makes for an amusing fact. This is the second ‘portrait’ bird paintings of the series. Key information The wren is a tiny brown bird, although it is heavier and not as slim as the even smaller goldcrest. It is dumpy, almost rounded, with a fine bill, quite long legs and toes, very short round wings and a short, narrow tail which is sometimes cocked up vertically. For such a small bird it has a remarkably loud voice. It is the most common UK breeding bird, although it suffers declines during prolonged, severely cold winters. Inspiration Its inspiration was taken during the early Spring when this bird is quite active. It’s plump body and size and speed make this bird a real treasure and a joy to watch. My main objectives were to create a piece that:- Shows the subtle and rich colours of the bird
- Capture the beauty of its myriad of brown complex and perfect colouring
- bring our the textures of the feathers and the characteristics that reflect the nature of the Wren

Steffan Johnson
Followers (New)
Born in South Wales, UK Steffan Johnson has had a constant instinct to draw and paint. From his efforts in school to his continued desire to study life through nature he has sought to follow traditional methods and means to convey the spirit of his subject. His background in Fine Art (BA Hons) and a continued grounding in artist workshops such as London Atelier of Representational Art and the Angel Academy of Art, Florence are the backbone to his work. With all that nature and its suggestions inspire, this is the core to Steffan Johnson’s work.
