After a successful career as a ceramic restorer I made a welcome return to painting, To refresh my techniques, I studied fine art with OCA 2008-2015 gaining a Diploma in Painting in 2016. I live and work in Hampshire my studio is in the garden.
My paintings are an emotional response to the natural environment, I am fascinated by shadows and reflections made by seasonal changes and natural light. I enjoy the sensuality of natural textures, leaves, water, grasses, feathers, clouds, and the landscape viewed as a mass of merging colours. Making spontaneous gestural marks with large brushes, and spreaders suggesting mood, glaze layers and textures build up rapidly creating visual and tactile interest.Colours are carefully chosen reflecting the season in which the painting is made
Transforming a blank canvas into a painting is an exciting process. The first mark on a blank canvas is always the hardest to make and dictates the direction of the painting.
Painting is a cooperative affair between an artist and the canvas. I like my paintings to be an authentic expression of something I have witnessed.
I admire and am influenced by traditional landscape artists like Turner, Constable and Gainsborough, as well as more recent artists such as the French Impressionists, Sir William Nicholson and his son Ben Nicholson, Piet Mondrian, Nicolas de Stael, Paul Klee and Sean Scully and many others.
