About the artwork

Fistral Rolling Waves original seascape oil painting on canvas. Canvas width 100 cm x height 70 cm or 39.5 x 27.5 inches. Signed. Unframed. With a certificate of authenticity. Free UK Shipping. Fistral Rolling Waves shows rolling surf breaking onto Fistral Beach in Newquay looking north towards Towan Head in the distance. Fistral Beach is in Fistral Bay on the north coast of Cornwall. Situated half-a-mile west of Newquay at grid reference SW 797 620. Fistral Bay is bounded by two promontories, Towan Head to the north and Pentire Point East to the south. Fistral Beach is Newquay’s iconic beach, quite simply one of the most consistent and best surfing beaches in the UK and Europe. This beautiful beach is west facing, long and sandy and backed by rocks and cliffs. Fistral hosts many festivals and events including Boardmasters – Europes largest surf and skate festival usually held in August. The UK ZapCat championships in April and August. The English National Surfing Champoinship, Night Surf and the King of the Groms Junior surf Festival. About I am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and fine art at the University of Plymouth has influenced the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement and escapism in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 17 years ago, it is the Devon and Cornwall coastline that still inspire me today. My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea. For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. This is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.

Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 15 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth. My recent work has been focused on the changing colours of the sea and childhood memories of holidays to the Mediterranean and annual visits to Torbay (before the M5 was built). I have been painting a series of wave paintings for over 5 years now. It is the light coming through the waves and ever-changing colour of the sea that I am keen to explore. Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me. The way collectors see my work will be unique to them because of their own individual colour perception. Painting f... (see more)
