This process involves Sarah Ramos mixing her own paints from natural oils and pigments, resulting in a plush organic palette which receptively moulds form. The work ‘Flowers in a Vase’ is painted on linen, a very fine type of canvas offering a durable and smooth surface and Ramos primes its suppleness to capture the modulations of the air. There’s much delight in these small paintings, which hints at Ramos’ background as an illustrator of children’s books. I was born and live in London, my work explores our relationship with the natural world and how it enriches us. I feel that my experience as a children’s picture book illustrator, has given me the foundation on storytelling. I feel that this has influenced my oil paintings, exploring the world with playfulness. I use sustainable materials, I make my own oil paints using natural oil pigments from the ground and mix them with oils such as walnut. I then apply my oil paints to surfaces such as linen, or canvas and cotton, all of fine art archival quality used by the old masters.
