About the artwork

"Into the blue ocean waves II"  was inspired by the way light stretches across an image using long exposure photography. This painting shows a wave cresting across a deep blue ocean. Lit by the sun the images creates a yellow and white light contrasting shades of emerald green, turquoise, grey, marine blue. The dark blue makes me think of the depth of the ocean, whilst the grey, greens and whites makes me think of the action of the waves and the strength of the sea. I work with oils because of their flexibility. Oils can give you a translucent effect for a cresting waves or a matt and flatter finish for the ocean surface. This creates great texture on the surface of the canvas when painting the sea foam or surf. I am a Teignmouth based artist and live close to the ocean and Dartmoor. This proximity to the South West Coast and the wild untamed landscape of the moor has influenced my recent work. The sea is an ever-changing element that I find fascinating. In my oil paintings I aim to invoke an immersive feeling. I want to highlight the rapidly shifting colours of the sea, from deep blue almost black to pale green nearly white. Following the initial painting and drying process I may apply glazes of oil paint to further enrich the surface of my work.

Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 15 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth. My recent work has been focused on the changing colours of the sea and childhood memories of holidays to the Mediterranean and annual visits to Torbay (before the M5 was built). I have been painting a series of wave paintings for over 5 years now. It is the light coming through the waves and ever-changing colour of the sea that I am keen to explore. Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me. The way collectors see my work will be unique to them because of their own individual colour perception. Painting f... (see more)
