This is my final piece in the Chinese Ink painting style for my Mary Magdalene project. I've long been fascinated with the historical figure of Mary Magdalene and her place as a maligned apostle in the early church. Here I envisage her as looking through time to gaze upon us in the west from the past where she lived, knowing her influence would still be so great upon us, smirking knowingly. My Chinese painting teachers were very unhappy that I chose to portray Mary here with representatively non-white features and skin tone. She is supposed to look like someone who might still live in modern day Palestine, not a red-headed model of Millais. They were not best pleased. Born and raised in London, I have loved art from an early age. I was introduced to Japanese art and language at school and quickly became obsessed with the way lines are used to render form. Having mastered the language I moved to Japan and studied Japanese Painting and traditional East Asian brushwork techniques in Tokyo from 2013. After gaining a BFA from Tama Art University in Japanese Painting in 2020, I moved back home and started working as an independent artist.
