About the artwork

Original oil on canvas painting: Width 50cm Height 60cm or 19.5ins x 23.5ins. Signed. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Porthcurno Beach is inspired by the colours found on Cornish coastline. Located on the far reaches of Cornwall’s coast, Porthcurno Beach is one of the finest in the UK. With soft white sand underfoot, an amphitheatre of cliffs on both sides and turquoise water lapping at the shore. Porthcurno beach is at the southern end of the Penwith Peninsula – the western point of Cornwall. It’s a glorious beach but being at the end of small country lanes in a remote part of the country, it can be a little tricky to get to. At the western end of Porthcurno Beach, a series of steps cut into the cliff form the spectacular Minack Theatre. Following the natural contour of the bay, the views over the outdoor terrace theatre across the ocean provide a truly unique setting. Furthermore, in 1870, a submarine telegraph cable was laid from the sandy shores of Porthcurno Beach, linking Europe with India, reducing the time it took to transmit messages from weeks to minutes. Porthcurno became a hub for global communications and today a museum stands proudly behind the beach. As a Teignmouth based artist I am close to the south west coast. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. Also It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and I gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a member of the Devon Artist Network and an Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.

Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 15 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth. My recent work has been focused on the changing colours of the sea and childhood memories of holidays to the Mediterranean and annual visits to Torbay (before the M5 was built). I have been painting a series of wave paintings for over 5 years now. It is the light coming through the waves and ever-changing colour of the sea that I am keen to explore. Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me. The way collectors see my work will be unique to them because of their own individual colour perception. Painting f... (see more)
