About the artwork
This was one of my first abstract paintings responding to music by visually interpreting sounds. The bright colours are derived from either beautiful vocal melodies or the sweeping lyrical orchestrations in some of the Richard Strauss tone poems and operas. The darker moments in operas such as "Salome" and "Elektra" are also represented in places. There is also a reference to Gustav Klimt in one area of the painting as Strauss's music has sometimes been likened to Art Nouveau. The painting was featured in one of the BBC Promenade Concerts on BBC 4 in September 2006 during the interval.

Art and music have always fascinated me and I have been involved with both for most of my life. In my professional career I worked with composers, songwriters and musicians and music has inspired many of my paintings. I have no particular style and simply paint how I feel when I start a new work! Painting gives me great pleasure and I hope others enjoy what I create.
