About the artwork

Sailing off Teignmouth original seascape oil painting on canvas. Width 100 cm x Height 50 cm or 19.5 x 31.5 inches. Signed. Unframed. With a certificate of authenticity. Free UK Shipping. Sailing off Teignmouth is inspired by by hometown of Teignmouth. This view is taken from Shaldon beach on the South of the River Teign looking north towards Teignmouth town and beyond. It shows the incoming tide submerging the sandbank which at low tide you can walk out on taking you as far out as the end of the pier. Known as Town Beach, this is the largest and main beach of Teignmouth. It stretches from Holcombe in the North-East, in front of the NCI Lookout at Eastcliff, borders the town, to the pier and on to The Point in the South-West.This is the beach looking North-East from Eastcliff towards Sprey Point, Holcombe and the Parson and Clerk. Teignmouth, on the mouth of the River Teign estuary makes an excellent base for a day out at the beach. This traditional South Devon seaside resort has some fine examples of Georgian architecture along with a Victorian pier. It is also situated on the South-West coastal path and the area is popular with walkers. Set at the mouth of a sheltered estuary the area is popular with kayakers and other water-sports enthusiasts. Teignmouth is home to two beaches; Back beach (or River beach) and the Town beach. The Town Beach offers a vast expanse of golden sand with plenty of room for building sandcastles, playing beach games or just sitting in the sunshine and enjoying the views. The clean waters are home to plenty of sea life. Dolphins have occasionally been spotted offshore. The Victorian Grand Pier was built over 150 years ago. It suffered extensive storm damage in 2014 but is being restored. The pier has an amusement arcade and fine views back towards the town. Along the seafront, young children might enjoy the award-winning Den play area. Inspiration I am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and fine art at the University of Plymouth has influenced the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement and escapism in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 17 years ago, it is the Devon and Cornwall coastline that still inspire me. My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea. For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is ideal when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.

Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 15 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth. My recent work has been focused on the changing colours of the sea and childhood memories of holidays to the Mediterranean and annual visits to Torbay (before the M5 was built). I have been painting a series of wave paintings for over 5 years now. It is the light coming through the waves and ever-changing colour of the sea that I am keen to explore. Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me.
