About the artwork

A St Ives seascape from an annual trip to Cornwall. It was painted following a trek in the direction of Hale and Godrevy and inspired prose. Families, when they trek toward Godrevy, stride recklessly, all wax-wrapped and enthusiastic. And yet the distance from it to you is immeasurable, a distraction of inlets and salt-fresh littoral caves. Grain frosted feet push through clawing sand, and deliberate over barnacled granite; and Godrevey knows. Sweet cream teas drawn through sun-dried lips,  a consolation prize; trip abandoned - it’s just a lighthouse. It will not be reached today, or ever. The totem’s knowing stare mocks every loser’s retreat;  A dignified reverence, reputation intact. The unattainable distance of Godrevy.

Born in The Potteries in 1968, I have fond childhood memories of being surrounded and amazed by my father’s paintings and sketches, the atmosphere they captured and their ever-progressing style. Stoke-on-Trent was a fascinating place in which to grow. Pottery industry gave way to the clay-soft rural countryside at the town boundaries; from bottle kiln to bucolic landscape. That abrupt transition can be witnessed in my paintings, swapping freely from portraits of local characters to classic landscapes which I feel a compulsion to capture in oils. Having studied printing and graphics at South Manchester College, I spent over 25 years as a printer and the next 15 years as a graphic designer. In 2017 I attended life drawing whilst ...
