About the artwork
Watergate Bay waves original seascape oil painting on canvas. Width 122cm x Height 76cm or 48 x 30 inches. Signed. Unframed. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Free UK Shipping. Inspiration Watergate Bay waves is inspired by the coastline of Cornwall. It particularly reminds me of a visit to Watergate Bay. That day the wind was whipping up the waves turning the sea a beautiful pale green teal colour. The tide was coming in fast making the pale yellow sand wet turning it ochre and the water left on the sand reflected the blue sky above. This painting show a large waves cresting onto a sandy beach. The sky is mixture of cerulean blue with wispy white grey and pale purple clouds . The light coming through the cresting waves turns the ocean several shades of teal and turquoise. The deep shadow of the wave is a mix of deep phthalo green and blue. The foreground shows sea-foam rising up and under the waves with wet sea foam making patterns of light on the water and a wet sandy beach. Watergate Bay beach, about 3 miles from Newquay on the North Cornwall coast, is a large beach. Two miles of golden sand at low tide stretches towards Newquay. Out at sea enormous waves come in from the Atlantic providing a spectacular sight making it a popular surfing and kitesurfing spot. Oil Medium I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. Also It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings which I started many years ago. Background I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. My exhibitions have been throughout Devon and one of my films was been exhibited at the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Teignmouth based artist. In conclusion, I am a member of the Devon Artist Network where you can see more of my work here https://www.devonartistnetwork.co.uk/catherine-kennedy-1 and a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.Watergate Bay Waves

Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 15 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth. My recent work has been focused on the changing colours of the sea and childhood memories of holidays to the Mediterranean and annual visits to Torbay (before the M5 was built). I have been painting a series of wave paintings for over 5 years now. It is the light coming through the waves and ever-changing colour of the sea that I am keen to explore. Everyone sees colour in a slightly different way to one another, call it colour perception. The way I see colour and the feelings I get when the colours align well on a canvas is appeals to me. The way collectors see my work will be unique to them because of their own individual colour perception. Painting f... (see more)
